In 1862, the country was invaded by France sought to collect debts that the Juárez government had defaulted on. For some time, the Liberals and Conservatives simultaneously administered separate governments, the Conservatives from Mexico City and the Liberals from Veracruz. Comonfort resigned from the presidency and was succeeded by the President of the Supreme Court, Benito Juárez, who became President of the Republic, leading Mexican liberals.

Approximately 250,000 lives were lost in the conflict, involving both civilians and Cristeros who were killed during raids after the conclusion of the war. In Sonora, they established a professional army, allied with labor unions, and enhanced government authority to foster economic growth. Once they assumed control, this initiative was elevated to a national scale. Their experiences in the northwest region of Mexico, characterized as “savage pragmatism,” encompassed living in a sparsely populated area, conflicts with Native groups, a secular culture rather than a religious one, and a community of independent, market-focused ranchers and farmers.
